Conscious Sedation

Do you feel nervous when you go to the dentist? Your dentist may suggest the conscious sedation which is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is used in combination with pure oxygen and affects your stress level for as long as you breath it. It will calm and reduce the stress level of people with high anxiety when they go to the dentist. The nitrous oxide acts as a relaxant to the brain. Unlike general anesthesia, nitrous oxide allows the patient to stay conscious during the treatment.

Nitrous oxide is completely safe for children and adults. It is recognized as the safest sedative to be used in dentistry. It is a non-toxic gas that removes itself from the body immediately after the treatment.

The treatment:

First, go see your dentist to determine if you are a good candidate for conscious sedation. He/She will evaluate:

  • If you can breathe through your nose.
  • If  you are pregnant or have any other health issues that may be contraindicated.
  • The medications you take.
  • Reactions to certain medications or allergies.
  • Recent hospitalizations.

The objectives for this treatment are:

  • Reduce anxiety and stress levels during dental procedures.
  • Reduce movements that may be harmful during dental treatments.
  • Increase the resistance to long treatments.
  • Reduce gag reflex.
